are crying foul. it is sparking another day of protests against president mohamed morsi. morsi's supporters plan to stage a massive demonstration tomorrow. holly williams is in cairo and has been watching this whole crisis unfold. >> reporter: a week after president mohamed morsi gave himself broad new powers that some egyptians say make him a dictator in all but name his islamist allies have rushed to finish a final draft of the country's constitution. it could now be put to a referendum before the end of the year. protests and violent clashes in cities across egypt, president morsi defended his power grab last night on egyptian state tv. he said his new authority is needed to guide egypt through its democratic transition and that he will give up his expanded powers once the country has a new constitution. a final draft of the constitution is now complete, written and voted on by a panel dominated by president's morsi's political allies, neither all of them islamists. the constitution gives islamic sharia law a more specific role in government and doesn't guarantee women's equality. it als

until further notice. >> this is all over president morsy's power grab. what about a potential constitution here? >> reporter: another important day today. the constitutional assembly in egypt at h hour is drafting egypt's all important new constitution. this is going to be the corner stone of egypt's democratic transition and one of the reasons why president morsy and the muslim brotherhood have been locking horns with opposition factions. this was a hundred member panel assigned to draft this constitution. there's been conflict. it is dominated by iz mists. liberal memberquit. some sued to disband the panel and start again. you will recall one of mr. morsy's ke crees said no one will disband this constitutional assembly. not even the judiciary. they believe it needs to be drafted to get it going. that's why opposition is upset. look for more conflict later today. >> thank you. >>> the other big news, in washington the white house tryinging to kick start fiscal cliff talks. just 33 days. congress breaks for the holidays in 15 days. >> treasury secretary tim geithner is going t

mohamed morsi. we're live in cairo with richard engel. richard, good morning. >> good morning, jenna. this country is divided. the mood is tense. competing demonstrations here in cairo today. here in tahrir square, they are against president mohamed morsi, saying that he has become a dictator and is trying to rush through a constitution that allows for too much islamic law. but in a sense of the way the winds are blowing here, the crowds here are small and somewhat subdued. compare that to across the nile river, in front of cairo university, where tens of thousands of morsi supporters are gathered. they want more islamic law. they want morsi to be a strong president. so egypt can get out of its political deadlock. neither side is backing down. and egypt appears to be at a cross roads. >> richard engel. richard, thank you very much. >>> north korea says it will launch a long range rocket this month. the defiant move set for december 10th through 22nd is likely to heighten already strained tensions with washington and with seoul and it comes just eight months after a failed april attem

there are breaking developments 24 hours after the muslim brotherhood and president morsi pushed through a constitution. tahrir square swelling with now protesters adding to those crowds. the president says the constitution is meant to protect the revolution but critics say it undermines basic freedoms, takes away rights to women. we are seeing new tactics. what are they doing? >> reporter: that's right, martha. we expect the opposition to try something new today to move here from tahrir square and march towards the presidential palace. it's a move that does have some risks. there could be conflicts with riot police who are lining the routes. they set up barbed wire. this will be a test of the opposition numbers. we have seen their numbers decline the past week but they could be energized by this attempted march on the palace. martha: we remember it was a close elect between the morsi supporters and the mainstream presidential candidate. we see them trying to find some balance in egypt and the struggle that came up with the judges over this constitution. what happened with that, steve? >

mohammed morsi to give back some of the sweeping powers that he seized earlier in the week. want to go live to cairo. reza sayah is overlooking tahrir square. is it calm where you are, and are people assuming that things are going to get better? there are a lot of critics who vague the broum brotherhood is really now trying to hijack the process, hijack the constitution and get the president to remain in power, as much power as he can hold on to. >> yeah. many of those critics, suzanne, are behind us. still demonstrating here in tahrir square. in the meantime, major developments unfolding. as we speak right now, egypt's constitutional assembly is voting to approve a draft of egypt's all-important new constitution. this is going to be the backbone, the centerpiece of egypt's democratic transition. all of egypt's laws are going to be based on this document. everything from the balance of power between the president and the parliament, the power of the army, the independence of the judiciary, the personal freedoms. once this draft is approved and all indications are it is going to be approved.
